In March 2023, the People’s Plan for Nature made recommendations for urgent action to protect and renew nature. In response to this the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission (FFCC) proposed a plan to hold a national conversation on food, asking people what they expect from government and business and how the food system can deliver more for health, nature and climate.
Food is at the heart of the some of the biggest challenges we face. Issues such as food security, ill health related to diet and the impact of food production on nature and the climate have all been apparent in the media.
We wanted to hear what people really thought about food and explored their thoughts on how the current food system in the UK could be improved. We co-hosted two Food Conversation sessions and event reports have been published:
- Dorchester Food Conversation: Co-hosted with Dorset National Landscape and Dorchester Town Council on 25 February 2025
- Dorset Food Conversation (Online): Co-hosed with Dorset National Landscape and Dorset Wildlife Trust on 5 March 2025
We also wrote to a wide range of youth organisations with a survey to ask if they would like to contribute.
- A Young Peoples Report has also been produced.
The discussions from the session will inform / have information a range of work:
- The responses informed a workshop session at the Dorset LNP Annual Forum on 26 March 2025 where we discussed the solutions raised as a start for developing a local action plan.
- We will feed into the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission’s Food Conversation programme, which we expect will inform the National Food Strategy being developed by Government in 2025.
- It will inform the Dorset National Landscape’s Management Plan Review.
- We aim to arrange a youth event later in 2025 to bring young people together to discuss these issues and the action plan.
